No iPhone apps for you! (kinda, yet)
Tuesday, Jun 12, 2007
Amidst the Leopard demos and Safari for Windows announcement, Steve Jobs clarified Apple's position on 3rd party iPhone development by saying that anyone can write an iPhone app by writing an Ajax-equipped webapp that will run in the iPhone's Safari browser.

Jobs threw disappointed developers a bone by promising hooks in to the resident phone, email, and maps applications, most likely by way of a one-way feed protocol (eg 'call://408-767-2775').

More than likely this is a stopgap maneuver while Apple makes their own APIs more stable and secure. In the meantime it appears that developers and end users won't have a way to fill any of the four remaining icon bays, nor will they be able to run a 'just as good as the real thing' webapp without Safari's chrome.

On the plus side, webapps are much easier to develop, 'install', and update. On the minus side they most likely won't have phone-side storage, and certainly won't have any facility for proactive notifications, say when an order comes in or your friend finally made their move in your telepresent chess game. Developers will most likely have to rely on SMS messages with embedded URLs for that kind of notification.

The coveted icon space is still the holy grail. By the way, those familiar with the South Bay might notice that the pin in the Maps icon is at the entrance to Apple's Infinite Loop headquarters.

Fury got Hacked
Friday, Jun 08, 2007
To be more specific, Dreamhost got hacked this week and 350,000 FTP passwords were exposed, including 12 of mine. As a result, I have to sweep through my files this weekend and remove about 200 instances of linkspam inserted into my pages. Of course, this is small potatoes compared to the 400,000 pieces of commentspam that litter the site.

Never fear though, I have a new site design that is commentspam proof (really!) and I'm hoping to get it out this weekend. I've been holding off on posting because I don't want to put words into such a 'dirty' place, and hopefully the nice, clean place for a blog is almost here and I'll be able to share all the stories that have been building up inside.

Flicker.com auction
Friday, Jun 08, 2007
Looks like the owner of Flicker.com is having a little auction of sorts for its site. I wonder how it'll work out for 'em.

Moral of the story: If you can't afford your chosen domain name before you launch your product, try and get it before the service takes off and the domain name holder holds out for an outrageous amount of money. Evan (twttr/twitter) knows this well. Spend big and early to forestall spending huge later.

Where's your 4th wall?
Sunday, Jan 21, 2007
Rachel and I were just being funny in the bedroom (not like that!) and I found myself wondering, "If we were in a sitcom, which wall of the room would be the 4th wall?" We both agreed it was the south wall for most scenes, but we'd need to use the ceiling for some conversations.

If I dwell on it too much I'll probably start unconsciously blocking myself for the best shot...

This one's for the long-timers and other regulars: I've got a few projects in the pipeline and I'd like some input along the way. It won't take much time, I just want a handful of Fury regulars as a feedback group.

Interested? Drop an email to 'focus' at this domain. Preference given to non-lurkers (those whose names I'd recognize).
