Link Affordances
Wednesday, Aug 09, 2000

It's long irritated me that some links open in new windows, some open in the same window, and others are actually javascripts that create a specifically-sized window. the problem is you don't usually know what's going to happen, and then it's too late.

This is especially irritating when you try to open a javascript link in a new window and just get a blank window.

So here's how it works on my site, and now I recommend other people do it:

It just seems to make things more intuitive. After all, most of the non-underlined elements are site navigation elements, which have the affordance of clickability by virtue of their position within a navigation bar.
