I'm looking for ways to improve the site, and I already have a lot of things in queue (not the least of which is getting the Cameo picture online!) but I'd like to hear what you guys would like. How can the site be improved? An AvantGo channel? WAP access? More tech stuff? Less tech stuff? More personal stuff? Less? More AOLiza? Less AOLiza?
Are you interested in the randomness of topics covered here, or is there something in particular that you enjoy? Speak out and email me at hello@fury.com so I can get a reading on the pulse of all you folks out there! Along with your suggestion, please let me know how long you've been reading fury.com for and how you found out about it (if you remember). Thanks! Wednesday, Sep 27, 2000
Okay, I've historically been very lucky with earthquakes. Living in California all my life, I've only been in one earthquake larger than 6.0, and I've missed five >6.0 quakes by days, in one case, by 15 minutes!
As you can see by the link in the sidebar nav, I like to keep a close watch on quakes in the Bay Area, and what I've been watching for the last few days makes me nervous. Let me explain. First, take a picture of the earthquake activity in the entire bay area for the last week. Here's a closeup of Berkeley: Now the three yellow squares are quakes in Berkeley (and Orinda) in the last three days. The blue square is a 2.3 quake this morning. Now 1.x and 2.x quakes are nothing, you don't even feel one if you aren't sitting still on top of it and expecting it, but most of the big earthquakes in California have had small foreshocks days or hours before the main strike. Okay, now for the scary part. If you look at the picture, I live on the part of the black Berkeley dot that is closest to the Hayward faultline (the black line running through the blue quake). I can see it from my apartment. Marion Jones could run to it in under a minute. What's worse, I live on the 6th floor of an unreenforced apartment building built in 1921. The Northern Hayward fault is due for a big strike, and while I'm knocking on wood, I know that if I'm in the apartment building when it happens, I've just got to jump on the bed and pray. What does impending doom look like? Let me show you. Anyhow, if the quake should happen, the machine that serves this site will bite it along with this building, so there will be no 'told you so.' Allright, I'm just being dramatic now, but I can't decide whether it's bad dreams for the past week that have caused my alarm, or my alarm that's been causing the bad dreams... How do things look right now? Check it out. Wednesday, Sep 27, 2000
Argh. I really wanted her to get her gold medal back. The IOC is totalitarianistic because it can be. "It's a drug. It's bad. Ban it! Kick 'em out! Take away their medal! We'll even admit it was an accident and it didn't give her a competitive advantage but we can't make exceptions." Really, the IOC should be an elected government. We'd see more debate and excitement than we do in the UN.
Anyone else think it's funny that the article about Raducan's failed appeal is sponsored by a pharmecutical company? Prilosec's parent company, astrazeneca, even manufactures several anesthetics, stimulants, and beta-blockers on the banned substances list, including atenolol, formoterol, lidocaine, and terbutaline. I'm not saying they're evil, I'm just saying it's funny they have an ad that says "Even Olympians get heartburn" over that particular story... That and the fact that they've absolutely pastered several Downtown SF bart stations with ads for Prilosec urging people to "take the little purple pill three times a day" where only one out of every 10 ads actually says what you should take it for... Heck, take it because it's a purple pill! Wednesday, Sep 27, 2000
So I found out today what last night's protest was about. Apparently, depending who you talk to, it was a protest against:
And pro:
Well, now that that's all cleared up... Wednesday, Sep 27, 2000
I've decided that the next time I'm looking for a position, I'm going to choose the one with the best view.

A while ago I talked about the need for subdomaining, that people should be willing to sell or rent subdomains of their domains to others, especially if theyhave domains that could be of use to a lot of people, like cars.com. (nissan.cars.com, ford.cars.com, etc.) Really, there should be more TLDs, but until then (or for less common names like kfox.weblogs.com or fox.clan.net) there's IHN. These folks will handle the DNS end of it for you, and let you build traffic to your own site (and make money) by leasing (or whatever) subdomains of your SLD to other people.
They have a few subdomainable domains of their own (like clan.net), and they encourage others to add their own domains for subdomaining. Worth a look see to get an idea of where the net might be going, if nothing else. Tuesday, Sep 26, 2000
Well the motorcycle cops and riot police are out in Berkeley tonight. They shut down Telegraph Avenue and surrounded Telegraph and Bancroft. I went up to one of them, asking what tonights riot was about. He said "I can't even remember anymore..."

It's voting day on SURVIVORblog! Wish me luck!
I've got lots of entries to write here, but I have a quiz today (neuroscience) and a big group report due tomorrow (UI design). I'll do my best to put some stuff up later today and tomorrow, and then after my philosophy paper on Thursday, I'll get a brief respite to put up some more. Have a great day! Monday, Sep 25, 2000
You may have read my earlier post about Apple's probable rationale in charging for the OS X Public Beta. Well, over the past few days it's been gnawing at me, not that Ihad to pay $30 for the beta, but that the beta will expire in March. I didn't just pay $30 for beta software; I paid $30 to be able to use beta software for the few months before it expires. Basically I'm paying to rent beta software, and that's even ickier.

I read a story on ABCnews.com today, reporting that Florida is investigating the Psychic Readers Network, claiming they were comitting fraud by hiring people from homeless shelters and 'training' them to be psychics.

The funny part (not mentioned in the story) is that earlier this year, New York City officials created a jobs program to do just that. So is it that NYC is more interested in getting jobs for their city's poor, or is Florida being bullied by some Psychics Union? |
